Canine-Assisted Learning Programs provide young readers and writers the motivation they need to practice their skills in a fun and “furry” way – reducing anxiety, improving confidence and always bringing a smile! Canine Companions for Independence Facility Dog Luann has been specifically selected to work with children due to her calm and friendly temperament. Registered Play Therapist Holli Farrell will facilitate all canine assisted learning sessions and Luann will always been on leash. Luann ListensReading Program – Facility Dog Luann will calmly and eagerly listen to your child read aloud during 20 minute individual sessions. Your child will bring appropriate reading material and Luann will give each child a “shake” and a “paw sticker” congratulating them at the end of session. Cost for this program is $40 per session.

Learn With LuannReading Program – Your child will read aloud to Facility Dog Luann and participate with fun and “furry” word and reading games during 30 minute individual sessions. Facility Dog Luann knows over 40 different commands! Registered Play Therapist Holli Farrell will incorporate these commands into canine-assisted learning activities to support reading comprehension, communication and confidence. Your child will bring appropriate reading material and Luann will provide the fun! She will give each child a “shake”, a “paw sticker” and a “stuffed Luann” at the end of their first session to practice reading to at home. Cost for this program is $60 per session.

Letters to Luann” Writing Program – Facility Dog Luann will exchange four mailed letters with your child strengthening focus, handwriting, fine motor, communication and reading skills. Your child will be excited to write letters to Luann and Luann will include self addressed envelopes, “paw stickers” and “doggy photos” in with her mailed response letters to your child. Also included is a 30 minute meet and greet with Facility Dog Luann at our Brandon office, facilitated by Registered Play Therapist Holli Farrell, after Luann receives your child’s fourth letter. During the meet and greet, your child will have the opportunity to interact with Facility Dog Luann and explore the toys and games available in our spacious play therapy room. Your child will also receive a “doggy goody bag” to take home and lots of smiles! Cost for this program is $75.
